News from Rumbek

Culture, science, environment and many more

Loreto Rumbek Secondary School recently held its first Club Presentation Day. Like every Loreto school, we have various clubs where the girls learn new skills, discover their talents, and do good for the local community and the environment while having fun together. Impressed by the diversity of the clubs and the commitment of our girls, we would like to introduce you our school clubs in more detail over the next few months.

Dancing is central to our South Sudanese culture. There is no celebration or occasion where we don’t dance. That’s why we’d like to start our introduction of the clubs with the Cultural Club.

Our Culture, Our Pride.

South Sudan is characterised by many different tribal cultures and most of them can also be found in our school. What has repeatedly led to tensions and conflicts throughout the country over the past decades is something that we learn to recognise as enriching diversity at our school.

In the Cultural Club, we rehearse the dances of all the tribes and perform them at school events and we love to show them to visitors.

When you learn the dances of another culture, you also learn something new about that culture. It is exciting to discover and learn which movements are made in a dance and what they mean. The costumes and traditional body paintings are also very different, and it’s fun to try out new things.

“When we dance, it brings us together.”

When we dance, it brings us together. We experience ourselves as a family, and it doesn’t matter which culture we come from. Each of these cultures has its own beauty, and we love to share this beauty and pass it on. It’s always a great pleasure when we perform our dances, and the audience gets excited and starts dancing with us. Everyone is welcome.
