Vocational training at Loreto Rumbek
Vocational training is the fourth core program of Loreto Rumbek. It has three focal points: the internship program, the tailoring program, and the Education Centre, with various courses.
Loreto Education Centre
The Loreto Education Centre at Loreto Compound, Rumbek, is a hub for higher education for those who have completed Secondary School. Dedicated to the holistic development and empowerment of the youth, the Centre offers a variety of programs, including internships, basic computer training, global English language courses, and tailoring.
In the aid to improve the standard of education at the Primary level, the Centre offers In-Service Training to Primary School teachers around Rumbek.
The Centre also provides short courses such as Mental Health Awareness and Career Guidance. All the courses are designed to equip young people with essential skills for their future.
Tailoring Program
The journey of our tailoring program began during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic. When the world seemed to pause, our spirit of resilience shone through. A few courageous young women took the initiative to learn the art of tailoring, producing and distributing masks to protect our community.
Today, the program has expanded to making uniform for our Primary School, part of the uniform for the Secondary School including their weekend dresses.
We also take small orders as part of our effort to be sustainable.
The Basic tailoring program is offered every term, to the willing students of our Secondary School (35 hours to 40 hours), our interns (20 hours a term) and to the local women (6 to 9 months) of Maker-Kuei and our surrounding neighborhoods.
Internship Program
The program started in 2013 when former students who had completed Senior 4 returned as assistant teachers in the Primary School and office assistants.
In 11 years, it has taken shape and grown into a formal two-year program with a review at the end of the first year.
The program was meant only for our graduates, where they get work experience and, in the end, gain a university scholarship.
In 2022, we opened the internship program to La Salle Boys Secondary graduates. In 2023, we widened the program and offered it to any other interested young person.
The willing candidates have to attend a competitive interview facing a panel of 4 to 5 members. At present, 20 places are available at every new intake once a year: 15 Loreto graduates, 3 LaSalle graduates, and 2 others.
Today the program is not just about getting work experience, but it is a place where young people are being prepared to face life. While in the program, every intern has to participate in compulsory programs, such as Global English Language, Computer Course, Basic Tailoring, Psycho-Social training, Safeguarding, and Child Protection training.
From conception until now, many have gone through university and returned as professionals.
